The WCHS Scholars Bowl team went to the state championship at Natoma, Kansas on Saturday, February 11. They finished with third place, after losing only two rounds all day. The two teams that WCHS lost to were Baileyville-B&B by ten points and Hutchinson-Central Christian by forty points. Going to the state competition was such a privilege. Twelve teams competed in two pools during the preliminary competition. Sharon Springs was the only undefeated team in both pools of the preliminary rounds.
In the final rounds of bracket play there was a two way tie for fifth place and a three way tie for second place. WCHS was in the three way tie for second place. All scores were tallied for each second place team. Hutchinson-Central Christian had the greatest points winning the tie and second place. Wallace County had the second highest score and placed third.
The Wildcats had a very successful day, beating Rolla, the State Champions, twice at the state championship. Also, at Regional competition, WCHS beat Rolla 60-0. It was bittersweet to lose first place to Rolla because of the final rounds. Sharon Springs was seeded in first place after the pool play with an undefeated record. In the finals, WCHS lost two rounds and Rolla only lost one round. Ironically, their loss was to Sharon Springs. If the pool play record was considered, then WCHS would have won because of a better record for the entire day. WCHS is very proud of the Scholars Bowl team and their outstanding season.
WCHS Scholars Bowl team includes nine members. Seniors-Catherine Jenkinson, Jayne Klinge, Cody Pearce, and Miranda Mai; Juniors-Grace Hammer and Darby Magwire; Sophomores-Clay Schemm and Dalton Walker; and Freshman-Chanity Daily. Jacalyn Mai has coached the Scholars Bowl Team for several years, this being her fifth year at state competition.
