Lady Cats Win All But One

WKLL Basketball Tournament

January 18, 2012

The Sharon Springs Lady Wildcats played the Dighton Lady Hornets to begin the tournament play this year at the WKLL tournament.

After coming off  a tough loss to the Thunderhawks on Friday, the Cats were focused in on starting the tournament off with a win. A key player in Tuesday’s game was junior Tatum Elder, tearing up the boards with 10 rebounds.

In the first half the Cats had a 10 point lead and they started the second half by putting a box and one on the Dighton player making the majority of their shots. That really shut down the Hornets in the second half.

The Wildcats finished strong with a 13 point lead to end the fourth quarter and to add a game to their win column. The final score Wildcats 45, Hornets 32.

The girls continued their bid for a league championship by taking on the Triplains/Brewster Titans on Friday.

They started the game off great by ending the first quarter with 15-6 on the score board. During that quarter, three point shots were key in getting such a large lead. Pletcher got the Cats on the board a little over a minute into the game by making a three-pointer. She soon followed it with another three. Junior Jenna Kriegh got into the action as well when she scored a three-point shot from well beyond the college three-point line.

Teamwork was on display in the second as freshman Rachel Kuhlman passed the ball through the defense to Pletcher for a layup. Pletcher continued the trend as she later passed to Hallie Kuhlman on a fast break for two points. Defense was also key in the half as the Cats held the Titans.

Hallie Kuhlman continued to work hard under the basket and scored six points in the third quarter. Kriegh once again struck from well beyond the collage three-point line and drained another shot right before the buzzer to end the quarter.

Heading into the fourth the Cats had a 17 point cushion. With just under two minuets left in the game it was clear things were going the Cats way. On a fast break Rachel Kuhlman passed the ball ahead but it bounced off the back of Hallie Kuhlman’s head. It bounced from her head to Pletcher who saved it from going out of bounds and passed it back to Hallie under the basket. Hallie missed the shot but grabbed her own rebound and made the shot on the second try. While making the shot she was fouled and also made the free throw to complete the old-fashioned three-point play.

The Cats won convincingly, 55-32. Seniors Kuhlman and Pletcher led the scoring charge. Kuhlman had 19 and Pletcher had 15 points, including three three-pointers. Rachael Kuhlman added 11 points and Kriegh had 6.

With two wins in the tournament, the Lady Cats advanced to the title game against the Weskan Coyotes. Things got off to a rough start as the Cats let the Coyotes dictate the pace of the game. That didn’t work out too well for Sharon Springs and they fell into an 8-23 deficit by halftime.

The second half was slightly better as the Cats scored nine points in the third quarter, which was one point more than they had scored for the entire first half. They held Weskan to only five points and made a slight dent in their lead. But it was too little, too late as they struggled to find any sort of balance on offense and defense. Weskan shut down the Cat’s main scorers and it resulted in a 26-39 loss.
