by Inga Sloan

April 20, 2011

Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors are eligible for National Honor Society upon obtaining a 3.5 GPA.  Faculty members are asked to select 3.5 GPA students for further nomination to NHS. Nominated students are asked to submit a resume detailing their community service, leadership opportunities, and scholastic achievements.  In addition, the faculty selection committee must also consider the applicant's character standing within and outside the school environment.  A candidate must possess high moral and ethical standards that emulate the National Honor Society principals.  This selection process was completed in early April.

The Fort Wallace Chapter of the National Honor Society of Wallace Co. High School held their annual banquet and induction ceremony on April 18, 2011.  Nine new members were welcomed by seven juniors and seniors.  President Taylor Weinland presided over the evening and Hallie Kuhlman, junior, Secretary, gave the history of NHS.  The four principles of the organization were recited by Recreation Leader, Jayne Klinge, junior.  Catherine Jenkinson, junior, explained the meaning of character and she currently serves as Treasurer.  Vice President LaKaya Steele, senior delivered the scholarship requirements.  The Leadership principle was given by junior, Zane Sloan, Parliamentarian and StuCo Representative, Cody Pearce, junior, stated the Service obligation.  Mr. Robert Young, Superintendent, presented certificates of membership to the new members, Dallas Buell, Senior, Arely Navarrette, Senior, Morganne Baehler, Junior, Joshua Lorenzen, Junior, Miranda Mai, Junior, Hayley Pletcher, Junior, Grace Hammer, Sophomore, Jenna Kriegh, Sophomore, and Heidi Pletcher, Sophomore.

Mr. Young stated that 16 members in National Honor Society represents almost 30 percent of the student body and that is remarkable for any size high school.

Current members, parents of the inductees, faculty members, Mr. Young, and sponsor, Mrs. Jennifer Smith attended the banquet prepared by Mrs. Virginia Renner.  As always, Mrs. Renner's food was outstanding as was the entire evening.  The high school is appreciative of Mrs. Smith giving her time to serve as sponsor.
