STATE POWERLIFTING CHAMPS, TWICE!

On Saturday, April 9th, 44 Sharon Springs Wildcats traveled to Quivira Heights High School at Bushton, Ks. to compete in the 1A State PowerLifting meet. The day was a great success with both the boys’ and girls’ teams winning a team state championship. The girls ended Quivira Heights' run of seven straight years as state champions with a convincing 121 points to Quivira Heights second place finish with 84 points. The boys’ team also had a very convincing win with 136 points to second place Centre High School with 109 points.
WCHS individual overall state champions in their divisions included freshman, Ally Dewees in the 114 lbs division, who was state champion in the squat with a lift of 175 lbs and in the bench with a lift of 115 lbs. In that same division, Jordan Compton was state champion in the clean with a lift of 110 lbs. Giselle Gonzalez was a repeat overall state champion in the 148 lb division. Being a two-time state champion is quite a remarkable feat. Freshman Dalton Walker was WCHS’s third overall state champion in the 181 lbs division. Dalton won the clean with a lift of 240 lbs, third in squat with a lift of 330, and second in bench with a lift of 235 lbs. In that same division, Edgardo Gonzalez placed 4th place overall and was state champion in the bench press with a lift of 240 lbs and was second in squat with a lift of 340 lbs.
Other individual state champions in their weight classes were Freshman Cayden Daily in the clean with a lift of 200 lbs in the 132 lbs division; Cayden also placed 2nd in the squat with a lift of 265 lbs; Dallas Buell in the clean with a lift of 255lbs; Holly Pettigrew was runner-up in the 123lbs division and also placed second in the squat with a lift of 185lbs; and Cody Pearce placed third in the squat with a lift of 380 lbs.
Lifters with personal best lifts were LaKaya Steele in squat, 165 lbs; Ashli Dinkel with 110 clean and 155 squat; Tatum Elder with 135 clean and 205 Squat and 125 bench; Jordan Compton 110 clean and 140 squat; Barbara Pelletier with a 200 lb lift in the squat and 135 clean; Giselle Gonzales with a 225 squat and a 135 lb bench; Arely Navarrete with a 140 lb squat; Dalton Walker with 240 clean,330 squat, and 235 bench; Kyle Gfeller with a 170 clean; Cayden Daily with a 200 lb clean and a 265 lb squat; Clay Schemm with a 215 lb clean; Callahan Grund with a 145 lb clean and 205 squat; Gavin Mote with a 210 lb clean and 245 lb squat; Edgardo Gonzalez with a 195 clean, 340 squat and a 240 bench; RJ. Dewees with a 300 lb squat; Alex Basgall with a 185 lb clean and a 225 squat; Gage Henderson with a 215 lb squat; Eli Kuhlman with a 210 clean and a 265 lb squat; Cody Pearce with a 380 lb squat; Braydon Summers with a 185 clean and a 245 squat; Dalton Davis with a 310 squat; Tyler Sharp with a 185 clean and 245 squat, and 165 bench; Josh Lorenzen with a 315 squat; Jacob Dipert with a 235 clean; Alex Simon with a 425 squat; and Darrell Magwire with a 215 clean and 275 squat. In all, WCHS lifters broke 49 personal best lifts. What a great day for WCHS powerlifters!
The Wildcats would like to thank all the parents that traveled to watch the meet. About half of the gym was taken in the stands with WCHS lifters and their fans. Also, a big thank-you to our superintendent, Mr. Robert Young and USD #241 school board members for the support and commitment to getting the team to this meet.
