Boy Scouts of America

by Darby Magwire

January 22, 2010

Scouting has been in Wallace County for quite some time.  That is why we would like to take this time to recognize the Boy Scouts of Wallace County.  Father Manzo, Catholic Priest for Sharon Springs & Wallace, took Boy Scouts to Old Mexico to camp in the early 1960s.  Father Manzo was involved in Scouts until he passed away.  In the year 1910 Robert Baden-Powell took Boy Scouts to camp in England.  During 2010, the Boy Scouts of America are celebrating their 100th anniversary.
For a few years Scouting had no participation in it from Wallace County, but then eventually started back up.  Past & present Scoutmasters of Wallace County are Father Manzo, Reverend Lundquist, Walt See, Cheri Rhea, Bob Lonsdale, Linda Mai, Virgie & Ron Popp, Jayne Pearce, & others.  Jayne Pearce is the current Scoutmaster in Wallace County with the help from Lisa Walker & Donna Magwire.  These ladies are working very hard to help Boy Scouts in Wallace County achieve their Eagle Scout award.
There have been approximately 10 Boy Scouts from Wallace County who have achieved the Eagle Scout award, which is the highest honor a Boy Scout may receive.  Some of the projects the Boy Scouts have been involved in are Scouting for Food, Flag Ceremonies, Turtle Race, Memorial Day, & Recycling.

The Ranks of Boy Scouts are
• Tender Foot
• 2nd Class
• 1st Class
• Star
• Life
• Eagle

The current Boy Scout members in Wallace County are Darrell Magwire, Dalton Walker, & Colton Springfield.  Dalton Walker & Cody Pearce are planning to attend the National Jamboree in Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia.  The Jamboree is going to be held from July 26, 2010 through August 2, 2010.  The National Jamboree is were Boy Scouts from all over the United States meet to celebrate Boy Scouts of America.

Congratulations!  Boy Scouts of America on celebrating 100 years.

If your son is interested in joining Boy Scouts please contact Jayne Pearce.
