While other students were cozy in their
beds, six students from WCHS loaded into a suburban at 5:30
Wednesday morning to make the two hour trip to Hays. Art and
accounting students spent the morning displaying their artwork and
showing off their smarts at Fort Hays University.
Lauren Elder spent over two hours taking a
series of tests for accounting and was an excellent representative
for WCHS. Out of approximately 75 students, she placed in the top
three for three out of four tests. She received first in General
Business, first in Marketing and third in Advanced Accounting.
“This was our first time to enter the contest and what a thrill to bring home three medals”, said Inga Sloan, Elder’s accounting teacher.
The day also served as an opportunity for the advanced art students to show off their projects and see the facilities at FHSU. After arriving at the coliseum, the students set up a display of their projects and were able to look at the projects displayed by other schools. While their projects were being judged, the students took part in a sidewalk chalking competition. They had two teams and their artwork had to include four of the five following objects: a squirrel, a meat product, a company mascot, an alternative energy source and a famous Kansas landmark.
There were many entertaining compositions and the WCHS students held their own against the competition with drawings called “Introducing the New Squirrel Steak” and “Kansas, the Heart of America.”
After the sidewalk chalk competition, the students returned to the coliseum and Ellen Fixsen, Amber Cloyd, Tori Taylor and Breanna Sharp all received certificates for outstanding work exhibited at the art show.
Senior Tori Taylor said, “I enjoyed
seeing all the other kids’ art and getting to draw with chalk and
be around my classmates.”
